Here is an extract from a recent interview in which Klaus Wuttke talked about his fascination with the very latest art-form: Digital Painting:
“I’ve always been excited by the fusion of art and new technology. I love to explore and experiment, and refuse to be tied-down to a single style, even though I have been told that this is ‘good commercially’. For me, the chance to select the perfect style in which to express every single one of my concepts is far more valuable.
Once I have an idea, I like to work very fast and intensively. Digital art is perfect for this – I can change aspects of an image very rapidly, so the flow of my thinking is less interrupted than if I was working in a traditional medium such as oil painting.
I use a variety of digital tools – computers, the iPad and a digital camera – and use graphic and photographic programmes as well as plug-in digital tools. If I can’t find the perfect tool to help me express a particular idea, I create it myself.
But all of these are only possible with the amazing digital printing technology that’s available The concept only comes into full being if you can print it – otherwise, all that I would have to show would be digits forming an image on a computer screen.
I also love digital art because you are not locked-in to producing only one original, as you are, with, say, an oil painting.
I can produce many originals, as each and every digital print is classed as just that.
It’s a fascinating parallel with Japanese woodblock prints, which were also ‘original’, highly popular and affordable.
I believe we are moving back that way today. And that’s wonderful, because it means that now nearly everybody can afford to be a collector of original art.”
